Thank you Charles Portolano for publishing my nature poetry. Honored to be with Carol Winter, Dave Jilk,Mary Jane Andrews, Wilda Morris, Ned Pendergast, Charles Portolano, Tim Grassley, Neil Creighton, Glenn Hubbard, Mike Witmer, Joel Savishinsky.

Autumn’s Chill

Autumn’s chill
paints leaves
in rich reds and gold –

casts them six feet

above chilled soil.

Sunflowers
become aged people.

Green stalks turn gray,

droop in defeat.

Yellow petals shrivel,

drop like ochre tears.

My sweater,
worn over a Summer top,

feels no compassion.

An intricate weave
of utilitarian fiber
has me shiver
behind buttonholes.

But like flowers and leaves,

I watch days fall apart.

Autumn rubs my shoulders –

a dubious sensation

born from wind,
devoid of love,
will die in Winter’s hands.

Snow will come
to bury the past –
the trees will be at peace.

Gray-White

Gray-white—the sky looks old,

devoid of sunlit blue.

Like the overcast that covers Brooklyn,

the colors in my neighborhood diminish.

Melting snow,

devoid of youthful white,

hugs the cars and curbs.

The featherlike trees,

devoid of chlorophyll expression,

stand like wrinkled silhouettes,

frozen in timeless sleep.

Sadness is everywhere—

gray-white paints the living room

to match my mood.

My poem in Nomad’s Choir:

LIVING IN SILENCE
I live in silence,
make my bed with your thoughts.
My tongue is numb,
unable to speak your name.
The color of your eyes,
the texture of your hair,
the touch of your hands,
the whisper of your words
must be kept secret.
You’re my guardian,
teacher, friend, lover—
you’re also my prisoner,
the one who gave
back my life.
You’ve left this physical plane,
but my free will brought you back.
Only the caverns of imagination
and the stillness of moonlight
can understand and protect
what became sacred.
I am the “x,”
you are the “y,”
but no formula can prove
what we’re experiencing.
Only when I die,
this silence will shatter
the temporal world

and love will occupy the universe.
