Come to the LES Theater for the New City at 155 First Avenue between East 9 and 10th Streets on Saturday, May 28, 2016. Richard West is having a poetry/ performance reading at the cultural fair outside LES. The reading/ performance is from noon to 5 p.m. What a beautiful way to celebrate the history of the arts on the Lower East Side. What a wonderful way to enjoy the cultural activities that make the Lower East Side unique and special.

The closest Bus lines to THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY are the M15 and the M8. The Uptown M15 will stop at 1st Avenue between St. Marks Place and 9th Street, and the Downtown M15 will stop at 2nd Avenue and 9th Street (please note: The M15 +Select Bus Service does not stop at St. Marks Pl/9th Street)
The M8 bus stops at 1st Avenue on St Marks Place (Eastbound) and 9th Street(Westbound).
The M14 and M9 buses stop on 14th Street and 1st Avenue in both directions.
Additionally, The M101, M102 and M103 buses stop on 3rd Avenue at St. Marks Place in both directions.

LOWER EAST SIDE FESTIVAL
Yes, L.E.S comes of age, it’s our 21st year. Now we can drink as well as vote, and we vote for and drink to, our fabulous festival dedicated to the past, present, and future of the Arts on the Lower East Side and the East Village.
The Theme of this year’s festival is: ART KNOWS NO WALLS OR BARRIERS. How fitting a motto, when we examine the history of the Lower East Side, breathe, it’s present and look with love and hope to its future. At a time when there are those who question the necessity to our nation of the positive energizing force of immigration, our festival is an always has been a celebration of that positive energy. An art party free for all and free to all celebrating the Lower East Side’s diversity in the Arts.
Examining the roots of our tree of Art, our point becomes undeniable. Think of Irving Berlin, The Gershwins, Yip Harburg, Jolson, Cagney, the Yiddish Theatre, they all blossomed here as did the nascent film industry. Mark Twain once lived and wrote here, Eugene O’Neill created and set many of his earliest plays here. Garcia Lorca and Poe left their mark here. Bord Jammed here, The Ramones and Blondie graced the gloriously grungy, late lamented CBGB’s here. The List goes on endlessly.
Since 1995 LES has taken place in and around Theater for the New City (155 1st Avenue between 9th and 10th street) as always it consists of theater, music, dance, comedy, performance art, Poetry, Video and fine Art. Local theater companies, dance companies, and hundreds of individual actors, singers, musicians, performers, poets, auteurs, painters, sculptors, all participate.
Already aboard for LES 2016, David Amram world acclaimed jazz artists, composer (the scores for “Splendor in the Grass” “Manchurian Candidate” “Pull My Daisy”) Conductor and beat icon. Phoebe Legere (she of the four octave voice, numerous musical instruments, painter, actor, writer and an unstoppable East Village Artistic Force.) Luba Mason, brilliant actress, star of Broadway (How to Succeed in Business,…Chicago) and numerous boites all over town. She has also graced our stage here at Theater for the New City (Nicholas Nickleby) Ashley Liang, exquisite star of Chinese Dance. KT Sullivan an incomparable soprano and interpreter of the American Song book, the darling of the New York cabaret world and long time friend of TNC. James Rado one of the creators of Hair with life long bohemian cred. Judy Gorman folksinger and international activist. Mark Nadler, Pianist par excellence, musical humorist with a golden voice, Cobu Japanese drum artists. New York theatre workshop, Constellation moving co, Aerialists, choreographers on the ropes, Rod Rodgers dance Co, Excerpts from In Questionable Taste an opera vandeville by the great composer Seymour Barab (Little Red Riding Hood, Out the window) Inma Heredia (Flamenca) The Medicine Show Theatre Company, Rachel Klein, Gretchen Cryer, La Mama, RENO, The Love Show, Melange, Robert Schwimmer, The Bond Street Theater, Wow Café, Zero Boy Sugar Ray by Laurence Holder Directed by Woody King and more signing up everyday.
There will be original works by writers Eduardo Machado, Etienne LaPage, Mario Fratti, Lissa Moira, Tom Diriwachter, Bina Sharif, Barbara Kahn, and Robert Homeyer.
For those new to LES the Nuts and Bolts of the festival works as follows:
We kick off on Friday May 27th at 6pm-1am in the Johnson Theater with all manner of magnificent music, theater, dance, comedy and performance art, designed to engage the mind, touch the heart and prick the imagination.
7pm-Midnight on Friday may 27th things start to swing downstairs in the Cabaret, theater performances here are a bit more intimate and veer further off the beaten track,
Saturday May 28th is Jam –packed with events.
At 11am on 10th street and First Avenue, a vast variety of vendors set up shop selling luscious victuals, handmade wear-ables and arts and crafts. As we throw up a stage for poets, musicians, dancers, actors, comedians, and performers of every kind to entertain from 12noon to 5pm. All curated by composer, writer, musician and nabob of all things Bohemian Richard West.
Indoors downstairs from 12noon to 12 mid-night the film portion of the LES Festival proceeds. See full-length features shorts, videos and animation. Curated by fantastic photographer filmmaker, actor and videographer Peter Welch in his inaugural year heading up the films. Check out Pull My Daisy Jack Keroua’s trail-blazing Independent (Before Independent was a thing) David Amram who wrote the score will be on hand to reminisce about its beat origins.
Indoors upstairs in the Johnson Theater Saturday May 28th from 2pm-5pm is the wildly popular youth portion of LES Curated by Primy Rivera and Danielle Hauser and hosted by the N.Y. Lyric Circus Juggler and bubble master John Grimaldi. Dozens of local schools and young performers will participate.
Upstairs in the Johnson on Saturday from 6pm-1am thrilling performances of theater, music, dance, comedy, and performance art resumes non-stop.
Sunday May 29th Upstairs in the Community Space from 4-7pm the Poetry portion of LES curated by the Prolific and much lauded playwright, director, poet, Lissa Moira, It’s a jam not a slam and features 30 or more of Downtown’s best known and about to be discovered poets and spoken word prose artists. This year’s featured guest will be the dynamically daring Valery Oisteanu a long time favorite fixture on the downtown scene. As always a wide-open mic concludes the poetry event.
Sunday May 29th from 6pm-1am upstairs in the Johnson theater and 7pm-midnight downstairs in the cabaret our festival keeps going strong with piece after piece de resistance that LES has to offer.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday you may of course hang out in the lobby, nosh at the concession and catch intriguing performances by such groups as Human Kenetics and of course:
Throughout the weekend art in the lobby curated by our artist and community activists in residence Carolyn Radcliff is on display. Painting, Photography, sculpture and collage by dozens of local artists. The exhibition has its own special opening on Wednesday May 25th 5:30-8pm and remains up through June. Join the artists on May 25th for free wine food and conversation, some frivolous, some profound.
Over the past 20 years LES has welcomed over 60,000 visitors from all over our precious earth. Today we remain, FREE, Multi-cultured and 21. We happily invite you to join our Artistic Director Crystal Field and the entire LES production committee this Memorial Day weekend. We promise no Walls nor Barriers will interfere with your artistic envelopment.
