Brevitas at The Bowery Poetry Club

 Short poem enthusiasts get ready! City Lore, an organization devoted to urban folk culture, and the Bowery Poetry Club will present the 8th Annual Brevitas Festival of The Short Poem on Sunday, November 6 from 2 to 5 p.m., hosted by Bob Holman with flourishes by Flash Rosenberg. 
Brevitas is an internet community of invited poets who e-mail one to two original poems (14 lines max) to the group on the 1st and the 15th of each month. This reading and book release party is the annual occasion for  Brevitas poets to actually meet in person.  The program features each poet’s top hits for 2011. 
Brevitas’ founders are poets Jim Pignetti and Steve Zeitlin, founder and executive director of City Lore. 
Admission $7 includes a free copy of the anthology
guest poets will be invited to sign up for the short poem open mic (14 lines max)

                                    Bios:



Amy Holman is the author of Wrens Fly Through This Opened Window, published with Somondoco Press in 2010, and Wait For Me, I’m Gone, which won a Dream Horse Press chapbook prize and was published in 2005. Her poetry has been in Archaeology Magazine (online), American Letters & Commentary, Barrow Street, Failbetter, Gargoyle, The Manhattan Review, New Verse News, Poet Lore, The Potomac Review, The Same, xconnect, The Best American Poetry 1999, and the forthcoming Token Entry anthology. She has recently written for the Best American Poetry blog, We Who Are About to Die blog, and her own blog, Lending Whale. She has also written publishing essays and columns for magazines, and a book on colonies, graduate writing programs, and grants. She is a literary consultant and teacher living in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

 

 

 

Peter Marra is from Williamsburg Brooklyn. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in the East Village, New York from 1979-1987 at the height of the punk – no wave movement.  Peter has had a lifelong fascination with Surrealism, Dadaism, and Symbolism. His poems explore alienation, sex, love, addiction, havoc, secrets, and obsessions often recounted in an oneiric filmic haze. His work has been published or is forthcoming in Caper Literary Journal, amphibi.us, Yes Poetry, Maintenant 4 & 5, Beatnik, Crash, Danse Macabre, Clutching At Straws, O Sweet Flowery Roses, Breadcrumb Scabs,Carcinogenic, Carnage Conservatory,Dark Chaos, Subliminal Interiors, mad swirl, L.E.S. review, and Calliope Nerve. He was recently interviewed by Yes, Poetry.

BIOS: 





Deborah Hauseris the author of Ennui: From the Diagnostic and Statistical Field Guide of Feminine Disorders (Finishing Line Press, 2011).  She received an MA in English Literature from Stony Brook University.  She has taught composition and literature at Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College.  Her poetry has been published in The Wallace Stevens Journal, The Pedestal Magazine, and -gape-seed- (Uphook Press).  She recently won honorable mention in the 2011 Great Neck Plaza Poetry Contest and third prize in the Farmingdale Poetry Contest.  She has presented her academic work at national conferences including the Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference.

 

 

Vicki Iorio is an award-winning poet whose poetry can be read online and in print publications.  She’s hoping to finish her first book of poetry early next year.  She especially likes to perform her poetry in tattoo parlors and tearooms.

 

 

 

Brant Lyonwrites poetry, short fiction, and music.  He is senior editor for Uphook Press (uphookpress.com) and producer/host for Hydrogen Jukebox (hydrogenjukebox.net), a reading series in NYC that pairs poets with an improvisational band. Brant’s own music has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poets Café, Galapagos Art Space, and festivals in Virginia, New Mexico, and New York City.  His poetry and short stories have been published in Rattle, Lullwater Review, Ganymede, etc., and in numerous anthologies.  Besides his newly released collection of poetry, You Are White Inside (Three Rooms Press 2011), his other publications include a chapbook, Your Infidel Eyes (Poets Wear Prada 2008), the spoken word/music CDs Beauty Keeps Laying Its Sharp Knife Against Me (Logochrysalis 2008) and Brain Ampin (Logochrysalis 2011).
